A day in the fields

Post by antonm1107 on Wed Mar 20, 2013 8:48 pm

A young, black-haired boy wearing monotone gray clothing sat up from his bed of grass, staring blearily into the plain before him. The sun was already hanging high in the sky, but Caleb felt as though he had woken up at midnight.

He stretched his arms into the air before going into his pocket to get his brown-tinted glasses, which he immediately put on before he yawned a loud, tired yawn. The sleepy boy turned to the pillow that was his backpack and opened it, picking out a small, half eaten packet of dried fruit. He grabbed one and tiredly placed it into his mouth. He had once loved the treat of having some dried fruit, but three weeks of having some every single morning had soured its flavor somewhat.

The tired boy glanced to his right, smiling slightly at the Poochyena lying sprawled on the ground just a short ways away. Caleb contemplated waking the little thing up, but shook his head and made a rare grin; Poochyena did NOT react well to being woken from its slumber. He'd learned that the hard way, and still had the bruise on his arm to prove it.

With a small sigh, Caleb turned back to his backpack, rummaging through its contents once more. He frowned as he counted his food supply - he hadn't stocked up since two weeks before when he had arrived at the town, and his supplies had dropped precariously low since then. A packet of jerky, some dried fruit, a bottle of water and that was it. Oh, and his sketchbook, a pen and a wide, cylindrical container of ink.

His eyes lit up as he brought the sketchbook up, opening it. It wasn't for him, mind you - he was horrible when it came to anything artistic - it was for his canine companion, Pooch.. He opened it and looked at each page, one by one. The first few pages of the sketchbook consisted of his own writing, and from there the majority of the book was filled with large markings which could only be distinguished as letters to either the trained eye or somebody specifically looking for a resemblance.

Still, despite Pooch's inability to write letters without ending up with a mess, Caleb was still amazed at his companion's progress. He'd already memorized most of the alphabet and the importance of vowels, and was currently learning about how the letters in written language corresponded with sounds in the verbal language. It was much harder than he thought, teaching a Pokemon to read, especially since they were unable to ask questions, and it was nothing short of a blessing that Pooch was a very fast learner.

Speaking of Pooch, the dog finally seemed to have awoken. The Poochyena smiled (or at least, Caleb thought it did, though it was hard to tell with a canine face) and walked over to Caleb. “What’s up?” The boy asked, passing a few pieces of jerky to the creature. It yapped happily in response before tearing into it, earning another grin from Caleb.

“Pooch, we’re gonna have to go back to town.” His companion glanced from its food and at Caleb for a second before going back to wolfing it down. “We’re running out of supplies and stuff, so I need to go to the market to buy some food. We’ll leave this place in... Three hours, alright?”

Pooch whined in response. “C’mon, it’s only for an hour or two,” Caleb said, “Besides, aren’t you getting tired of this place?” The canine shook its head. “Well, if you can’t bear to leave for a few hours, how’re you going to leave this place for good tomorrow, eh?” Another whine emitted from Pooch’s throat “Whether you like it or not, we need to get some supplies. I’ll give you some time to get ready, alright?” Pooch nodded and pawed the ground sadly, his food having already been wolfed down.

Clouds seemed to roll in from nowhere over time, and a slight sprinkle changed to a heavy down pour upon the two. Lightning flashed and a figure charged toward the two, it galloped along with it's mane lighting up. It circled the two as more lighting flashed, it was small though at about hip-height. The pokemon reared back and stomped on the ground with all it's might.. The pokemon wanted to challenge the two to a battle.

It was completely black other than white stripes along with a white mane and a short little tail. It cried out, "BLIIIITzlle!" as it waited for a response. It threw it's head back and forth intimidatingly, hoping to taunt them into battle.

Caleb frowned upon feeling the first droplets of rain splash onto his face. "Crap, it's raining," he said. Pooch nodded and whined its discontentment. The frown widened as the rain began to pour heavily. "Where the hell did this come from? I could've sworn that it was cloudless just a minute ago..."

That, of course, was when the horse thing - Blitzle? - came. It was circling them, again for reasons that Caleb couldn't begin to fathom, before stopping and stomping the ground in what seemed to be anger. "Erm... Hi?" Caleb said uneasily, unsure of what was going on. "Um... Are we in your territory or something? Do you want us to leave?"

Pooch, of course, was not as blind to Pokemon traditions as its companion was. The puny Poochyena grinned a wide grin as it ran in front of his companion. it snarled at its opponent, accepting the battle offer, before looking up into the sky and opening its mouth to howl.

"Pooch, what's with the hostility?" Caleb said as he stood up and walked forward. Pooch rolled its eyes, annoyed, before giving a quick glare to Caleb which, in the unique, instinctive language they had come up with, meant 'Shut up.'

Once its companion got the hint and sat down again, Pooch turned back to its opponent, prepared to dodge whatever attack it would have began to use while he was distracted.

The blitzle cried out with glee and started off with a tail whip. It waved it's tail back and forth at the dog like pokemon, trying to appear cute and lower it's defenses. The blitzle continued to whip it's tail back and forth, wanting to get the pokemon's defense as low as possible before attacking. The blitzle wanted to end the battle with ease on it's part, and the tail whip would make it's attacks deal a lot more damage than before. It completely ignored the pokemon's trainer, focusing on the pokemon. Lighting flashed once more and the blitzle reared back a bit and charged forward, using it's Quick Attack to rush towards the poochyena.

It was a good thing that Pooch didn't notice the Blitzle trying to act cute, otherwise the quick attack would have hurt more than it actually did. It had taken the hit full blast and fell on its back and onto the wet, grassy floor. "Chee." It grunted as it got back onto its feet, before staring at the sky howling a loud, canine howl, which boosted his attack power.
When it finished its howl, it charged towards its opponent, ready to turn at the last second and tackle the creature with its body rather than its head.

Caleb sat back and watched, afraid for his companion, but did nothing to step in. It was Pooch's fight, after all.

The blitzle had been to busy gloating about it's attack that it hadn't noticed the poochyena charging towards it. It was hit right in the chest, sending it backwards. It caught itself on it's feet and gave a mean look at the poochyena as if to say, "How DARE you attack me?" the blitzle turned and waved it's tail cutely once more, it tried to act cute again except he tried a bit harder. The zebra like pokemon turned back to face the poochyena and stomped it's foot twice like a bull before charging towards it full speed once more in another quick attack. The wind and rain whipped the electric pokemon's face but it didn't mind, the lightning flashed and seemed to give it a bit of a boost as it felt as if the lightning was cheering for it. The blitzle cried out as it charged right towards the poochyena and was prepared to keep going right into the trainer if the poochyena dodged; for it was going to fast to stop itself in time so it would just barrel over the human.

After having been attacked by the crazy pony thing, Pooch wasn't about to let it lower his defenses with a stupid whipping of the tail. Or so he thought, anyway, though subconsciously he had already lowered his defenses.

Which was why he took much more damage than he really should have when he took the brunt of the hit again and fell back, accidentally falling against his companion in the process. "Ah!" Caleb yelled as he fell from his sitting position into a lying position. He stood up quickly, holding his bag as if it was a sort of shield. "You need any help, Pooch?" The dark type, who had also gotten back onto its four feet, shook its head in response. "Alright. I'll just be a way off so that I don't get hit again."

Pooch was very angry now. Angry at itself for falling for the tail whip. Angry at its opponent for attacking its trainer (albeit indirectly). And all this pent up anger had to go somewhere, didn't it?

And thus, it howled a howl of rage that didn't seem to fit the puny dog. Before it had even finished its howl, Pooch had already charged at the pony, ready to strike it head on.

Attacks used: Howl, Tackle

The pokemon was unable to avoid the attack, it screeched in pain and lightning flashed again. It landed on it's feet gracefully once more, although it was a bit clumsy this time. It whipped it's head around again in rage as it charged toward the poochyena, forgetting to use tail whip and forgetting about his original plan. He charged straight for the poochyena, showing no signs of stopping once more and going to fast to stop instantly. It was like a charging bull, unable to stop and had a really rowdy attitude.

Attacks used: Quick Attack

Finally, Pooch was able to dodge the rowdy pony. It grinned slightly before howling a loud, rage-driven howl. Power seemed to flow through the canine, and before long it rushed at the feral pony with another tackle, sure that its ferality would prevent it from thinking straight and dodging.

The poochyena assumed correctly. The pony hadn't thought a thing about dodging, but instead ran straight towards the poochyena in a game of chicken. It tried using quick attack at the last second to prevent dodging, but failed. It had been hit head on by the attack! The zebra pokemon didn't land so grace fully this time, it spun a bit as it crashed though the grass. It then struggled up and yelled angrily at the poochyena, using tail whip. It wasn't finished just yet!

It's funny how ineffective tail whip can be when its user is clearly extremely angry and apparently willing to tear someone's throat out. As such, Pooch ignored the pony, instead shaking in a futile attempt to get the rain off of its fur. It was pouring pretty hard, and it was getting harder and harder to see beneath the torrents of rain. The canine didn't bother to howl again - doing so could alert the pony that it was readying an attack - instead simply charging at the blitzle as it whipped its tail.

Caleb frowned as he watched the battle from the sidelines. Rain poured down all over his face and onto his glasses, making it even harder to see. He wondered for a moment what exactly they were doing; it was obvious that they were battling, but for what purpose? Was it a tradition, or perhaps just a game? It invoked too much emotion, in his opinion, for it to be just a simple game, and the blitzle was too feral to be doing this for tradition (assuming that his observational skills were as good as he thought they were). The boy shivered, freezing as a gust of wind blew past him. "How long is this going to take?!" He yelled, though his words were drowned out beneath the storm.

Blitzle cried out as the tackle hit it again. Lightning flashed once more, lighting up the field for a brief moment to show to the trainer that the blitzle was slowly getting up and was covered in mud. The mud clung to the blitzle as the blitzle glared at the trainer and the pokemon. It cried weakly at them, "Blitz!" before slowly limping away and disappearing behind some bushes and a tree. It seemed to have given up, and fled from battle. Pooch wins!

Re: A day in the fields

Caleb watched the pony limp away through the torrents of rain incredulously; what was that about? There seemed to be no purpose to the battle besides the battle itself, unlike Pooch's few other battles which seemed to be caused by coming into enemy territory. Perhaps the Blitzle a released Pokemon? Or battles worked differently here in the Daycare Fields, as close to society as it was?

He shook his head; it didn’t matter either way. He was overthinking it. His canine companion yapped and came to him, limping slightly. “Ah, damn, we need you to get bandaged up, huh?” Caleb frowned; he didn’t actually have any bandages on him, and he never got potions in the first place. “Well, thanks to that battle - what was that about anyway? - we’re gonna have to go to town early. Stop with the puppy eyes, Pooch,” he said, avoiding the poochyena’s cute stare, “We’re going and that’s final.”

The rain had, notably, begun to let up, and the thunder seemed to have stopped. This, unfortunately, wasn’t much of a comfort for Caleb, whose bag was now a flooded pile of useless leather. His food was so wet that it was almost inedible, and the contents of his sketchbook had been washed away. “Stupid rain,” he mumbled as he grabbed his wallet, which was (thankfully) left unharmed by the rain. “Let’s just leave this bag here, yeah? We don’t have anything we can use in it, and it’ll just be a burden to carry. I’m sure the locals will appreciate the food, too. I’ll just by a new backpack when we get to town - something waterproof this time, yeah?” Pooch yapped in agreement. “Alright then, let’s get.”

Before they left, however, Fate decided to intervene. Fate, of course, is a fickle little bitch, and as such decided that it would be a very funny joke to send a wild Pokemon their way while Pooch was weakened.

Re: A day in the fields

The smell of the food pushed around by the coldness and breeze of the wind was enough to attract another Pokemon to come out from its shell. Peeking out from behind a tree, a small Psychic type cautiously wandered over to the abandoned backpack. The Pokemon's stomach growled, which only made the food more tempting to eat. It poked its head inside the bag curiously, but shot its head back up when it heard the faint sounds of speaking. Spotting Caleb and Pooch, the Psychic type immediately assumed that they had taken stuff from the bag.

This Pokemon was quite greedy, so it became upset in a matter of moments.

Carefully nudging the backpack aside, the small Pokemon bolted towards Caleb and his Poochyena as fast as it could go. "Gothiiii!!" it screeched, coming to a stop a good distance away from the duo. The Pokemon, a Gothita, did know that it was not a good match-up with Pooch being a Dark type and itself a Psychic type, but at this point of hunger, it didn't really care. The Gothita adjusted into a battle stance, giving a menacing glare towards the trainer and his Pokemon.

A wild Gothita appeared!

Caleb stared incredulously at the psychic. "What in the hell is that?" he asked his companion, pointing at the weird baby... thing. "Agh, I don't think we have time for this! We need to get you healed up and get some stuff to buy and-"

And Pooch had already taken its battle stance, snarling contemptuously at its opponent. The atmosphere around the battlefield felt different from the one in Pooch's battle with the Blitzle - even Caleb, whose level of expertise when it came to Pokemon battles was nigh nonexistent, noticed it. While Pooch's battle with the Blitzle was done solely for entertainment, a much more dangerous type of hostility permeated from the psychic baby.

In this hostile environment, Pooch did not feel courteous enough to allow its opponent the first move. The canine immediately howled a long, lonesome howl into the sky. It wasn't going to take any chances with this one; Pooch was aiming to kill.

Caleb glanced from one creature to the other before sighing and backing away. "Yeah, sure, sure, deal with it." Despite his apparently nonchalant tone, however, it was clear that within Caleb was of the same opinion as his companion; should the enemy pose too much of a threat, he wasn't afraid to directly intervene to protect his friend.

Attacks used: Howl x2

The Gothita did not care much for the awful howls the opponent made - the response was a cringe and another screech, signaling that although it didn't do much, it did something.

Wanting to simply ward them off in order to eat in peace, the Psychic type went ahead and used Pound. The Gothita's tiny left arm began to glow white, and it charged forward, attempting to hit the Poochyena successfully.

Pooch dodged to the right and, upon landing, charged at the psychic, ready to tackle the creature. The rain did nothing to deter it - Pooch seemed to have forgotten it completely, in fact. No, what did deter him slightly was the limp he'd earned from his previous battle.

Caleb couldn't believe he didn't notice the limp sooner. It wasn't bad - probably just a sprain, if anything - but he knew that it would could prove disastrous in this battle against the psychic type.

The Gothita let out another battle cry, obviously beginning to get frustrated. It had expected for this battle to be done after one hit since it thought it was really tough. The little Psychic type came to a halt as it registered that the Poochyena was charging forwards. Unable to dodge because of its "deep" thinking, the Gothita flew a short distance away and collided into the now damp ground.

It laid there for a few moments before bolting back up, now both wet and dirty. The Psychic type did not waste a single second. It charged forwards, the tiny arm of the Gothita glowing a solid white yet again. The eyes of the little Psychic type had such fury that you'd think it was mad about something other than food.

Pooch yelped in pain as he got pounded, yet again, by the psychic type. It did not let the attack defeat him, however; the Poochyena howled once more into the sky, forcing himself to continue the battle, before running at the monster to tackle it into submission.

As the creature's fist made contact with Pooch, Caleb cringed. He made up his mind; they had to leave now. Screw the battle, screw this doll thing, he and Pooch had to get out and rest up back in town. "Pooch, stop battling and get out!" The Poochyena was deaf to his calls, however, as it howled into the pouring sky and tackled the Gothitia.

[ late, gomen!! ;w; ]

The little Gothorita let out another screech as it was attacked almost immediately after it did so. It flew back a bit, clearly taking a critical hit on the Tackle move. The Psychic type wearily stood up. "Gothiiii!!" it screamed, stomping a foot down angrily.

It seemed to be having some sort of tantrum. Wincing at the pain, the Pokemon once more made it's little arm glow white as it charged forwards. It went as fast as it's little feet could take it, although that wasn't fast seeing as it was getting awfully damaged.

"Cheee!" Pooch yelped in pain from its opponent's charge, landing on its side. It whimpered in pain, trying and failing to get up. It glared furiously at its opponent, but found itself unable to get back up.
"Arceus, Pooch, get up! We have to leave!" Finally, the Poochyena paid heed to its companion, but could not muster the energy to follow through with the order. "You're hurt?!" The rain still continued to pour down on everybody, making it hard for Pooch to discern what Caleb had said, but Pooch managed to understand.

------------------------------------

It was just supposed to be one of those regular battles they'd had before. Pooch fought against a wild creature and won immediately. In this case, however, it seemed as though it would be Pooch that would be defeated.

It was with this in mind that Caleb ran up to the baby doll thing and made to kick it straight in the stomach with all the force he could muster.
